Although residential MBS have their origins in the US agency market, the securitization technique has spread globally. Nevertheless, some jurisdictions favor enhancing mortgage financing through the issuance of covered bonds. Here we look at the development of residential mortgage securitization in non-US markets and examine the different collateral types, structures, and security characteristics in these markets.
