National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) were established in 2002 by the Joint Commission (TJC) to assist accredited hospitals and healthcare organizations in addressing problematic patient safety issues, as identified by sentinel event reporting. Issues with the highest priority are included in program-specific NPSGs, and addressed during accreditation surveys. Elements of performance (EPs) within each NPSG address the most currently accepted clinical practice guidelines.
