The list is released every year, compiled by LinkedIn’s editorial team who work hard to spotlight rapidly growing companies. This year, LinkedIn utilised data from January to July 2020 to ensure that it captured startups that were resilient through COVID.

In the same way that the internet has changed the way in which we consume music and entertainment, advancements in technology continue to impact the way in which we learn. 

Thanks to the internet, the scope of education has far outgrown the bounds of a physical classroom or training room. Schools, universities and organisations now expect learning to be adaptive and delivered in the flow of work, catered specifically to their students or employees. 

At the same time, learners now expect to be able to access and consume learning content, at their own pace, and on their own device. 

We are seeing the eLearning industry continue to transform, both from a format and a delivery perspective. And it’s an exciting time. 

The evolution of subscription-based streaming for learning

There’s no doubt that streaming through apps and devices has become the new norm, whether you’re listening to music, watching a movie, or learning something new.

Over time, we’ve seen the evolution of music move from physical products, in the form of records, cassette tapes and CDs, to digital streaming. 

Spotify, amongst other players, realised that consumers wanted more of an uncapped music experience - and a flat subscription fee was the answer. For musicians, Spotify provided an easy way to upload their music, increase their audience, and get paid a percentage each time their song was played. To date, the Spotify platform has paid artists over $2 billion in royalties.

We are now seeing a similar trend across the learning industry, with more learning content being created and delivered in digital format. In this way, the subscription based streaming model is set to play a key role in the future of learning. 

How subscription-based streaming works for creators

Just as the convenience and flexibility of streaming is benefitting learners, subscription based streaming can also provide great opportunities for learning content creators. 

To understand the benefits of subscription based streaming for content creators, it can be helpful to turn once again to the parallels of the music industry. 

Let’s look at Spotify’s payment model. Here, D.A. Wallach explains how Spotify pays artists:

"People need to transition from unit-based thinking to consumption-based thinking in terms of royalties. We feel the metric of success should be based on how many people are listening to your music over a period of years, as opposed to looking at how many units are shipping in one week. 

People are used to seeing big numbers from a unit-based model, but that's really front loading what is happening. Comparing iTunes sales with Spotify payments over a two month period of time is not a great way to look at things. What we are trying to create is a system in which you earn royalties forever for good music, and the time horizon is simply different than what folks are familiar with now.”

The world of learning looks very different today to what it did a mere 3 months ago. University campuses are closed, home-schooling is widespread, and most face to face corporate training is cancelled. As a result, educators and content providers need to adapt how they produce content to be is easily accessible to learners online, while still delivering effective learning outcomes.

Today, we are excited to announce the launch of the Go1 Learning app for Microsoft Teams! 

We have heard many requests to be able to more easily access learning content within Microsoft Teams, where learners are spending a lot of their time. The new Go1 Learning app brings learning content directly into Microsoft Teams, enabling individuals to find, consume, share, and discuss learning resources from within Teams.

We’ve seen a tremendous amount of excitement when previewing this new app to our customers. We hope that in these times where remote learning has become a necessity for many, that you enjoy this new app to improve ease of access and learner engagement for learning content!

The app can pull in learning resources from Teams files, your computer, web links, your learning management system, and Go1’s extensive library of learning resources. The Go1 app also supports interactive content formats like SCORM, AICC, and xAPI.

Organizations can tailor the learning resources that are visible in different teams. With learning resources easily accessible and conversations around learning resources only a click away, organizations can deliver an amazing learning experience, whatever that learning might be.

Announcing the launch of the Go1 Learning app for Microsoft Teams

Each year, on 8 March, we observe International Women’s Day across the world.

For many, it’s a day to celebrate the social, political and cultural achievements of women all over the world. For others, it’s an important call-to-action to continue pushing for gender equality and a reminder to reflect on what’s been achieved - and what work still needs to be done. 

Many people believe that gender equality has already been achieved. However, this is unfortunately not the case. In fact, according to the Global Gender Gap Report 2020, gender parity will not be attained for another 99.5 years. This means that’s it’s very unlikely we’ll see gender equality achieved within our own lifetimes. 

It’s really important to realise that gender equality improves things for everyone. For society as a whole. 

As the Global Gender Gap Report 2020 says, “gender parity has a fundamental bearing on whether or not economies and societies thrive. Developing and deploying one-half of the world’s available talent has a huge bearing on the growth, competitiveness and future-readiness of economies and businesses worldwide.“

Let’s pause and think about that. Gender equality is essential for economies and communities to thrive. 

So where do we get started, to work towards that goal as a collective?

Accelerating gender equality in the workplace

One of the key areas in which we still see a lack of gender equality is in the workforce. 

While today, 87% of companies are highly committed to gender equality - a huge increase from 56% in 2012 - many challenges women remain, including the persistent gender wage gap, an under-representation of women in leadership and the tech industry, and the impacts of sexual harassment, discrimination and gender stereotyping.  

With this year’s IWD theme, there is a strong focus on 'collective individualism' - the idea that we are all parts of a greater whole. And that our individual actions, conversations, behaviours and mindsets can have an impact on our larger society.

As renowned journalist and activist Gloria Steinem said, "the story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.”

Here are some positive actions you can take in your workplace - whether you’re an employer, manager, or employee - to create steps towards a culture of gender equality. 

How employers and managers can promote gender equality

If you’re an employer or manager, you’re in a strong position to take action on this issue. There are many things you can do to accelerate gender equality within your organisation, creating positive change on a higher level in the process.

Aim for an equal target of representation of each gender in employment and leadership roles.

Make sure that women and men who are doing the same role (for example, two engineers or two senior leaders) are paid the same amount of money.

Ensure female employees are involved in policy and decision-making processes.

Always be inclusive, making sure women are equally represented in delegations, speaking panels and boards.

Provide ongoing training in areas such as inclusion, unconscious bias, gender and leadership.

Create a safe and positive environment for all staff - all individuals have the right to work in a non-threatening work environment, free from any form of harassment.

How employees can support women in the workplace

It’s not just CEOs and employers who can make a difference in improving gender equality in the workplace. Employees are also encouraged to look closely at how their female colleagues are treated and valued in the workplace. 

Individuals – both women and men – can choose to create powerful positive change within their own spheres of influence. In recent years, we are seeing more men becoming better champions and allies for equality, helping to accelerate gender equality in the workplace. 

Question any lack of women's participation

Ensure credit is given for women's contributions

Supportively call-out inappropriate behaviour

Identify alternatives that are more inclusive

Remember, you have a voice and the right to speak up about gender inequality and bias when you see it. Let International Women’s Day be a positive reminder to celebrate women’s achievements across the world and advocate for a more gender inclusive world – every day of the year.

With continual, ongoing action in this area we can help to drive better outcomes for women and change lives around the world.

As the holiday season is upon us, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and those who have helped to shape our business. It’s been quite a year for the Go1 team!

At Go1 we believe in bringing the learning community together so that we can all share our knowledge and help everyone to improve the way that they learn and train their team.

Our meetups are for learning and development professionals who want to discuss best practices, strategies, and innovation in learning design, delivery and instructional technology. This year we appeared in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne for our Learning & Technology Meetups. We discussed why HR & L&D managers should learn leadership skills in order to influence, impact and engage staff learning. 

We also explored learning and development on a budget - how to build learning momentum in your organisation and develop your people on a tight budget. 

This year we held our very first Client Forums across Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Attendees had the opportunity to hear directly from the Go1 team about product innovations and what's in store for the future. It was amazing to see so many people from a range of different industries come together to share their strengths and challenges in the L&D space!
