Everyone has the right to be treated with respect, but respect must be mutual and it must be earned. Managers need to role model respect for their team. In this amusing case study from the Cutting Edge team, Serena is concerned that the culture lacks basic elements of respect. Some team members confront Carol about her racist and insensitive comments. Meanwhile Sam and Sanjay ridicule Serena, which she overhears and is devastated. Carol sees the perfect opportunity to give Serena a pep talk and help her get back on the horse.

In a respectful workplace there are clear boundaries. It starts with being polite and constructive. Learn about others' feelings and make sure your comments or observations are not rude or offensive to others.
