While the assumption of goodwill must rule every workplace, occasionally, you will encounter people who cross the line of respectful discourse and whose "word games" flirt with the gray area between honest humor and covert aggressiveness and bullying. When it comes to defending yourself verbally, half the battle is identifying what’s being done to you. If you can recognize a shot at you when you see one, and if you can figure out the tactic the other person’s using, then it’ll be easy to decide how to respond.
