Stock Indexes

Equity market performance is measured by reference to stock market indexes. A hypothetical portfolio containing all possible securities would be too broad to measure. For this reason, stock indexes have been developed as proxies of overall market performance. However we see how stock market indexes are now used for other uses such as benchmarking and index investing. The different stock index types are then discussed.
