Public Holidays

Course Description

Public Holidays form part of the National Employment Standards (NES). The NES applies to all employees in the national workplace relations system.  

Public Holidays are days that are legally recognised in the NES as Public Holidays, as well as additional holidays declared by relevant State and Territory Governments.

  • Understand what a public holiday is, including public holidays in your relevant state or territory;
     
  • Understand the employee entitlement to public holidays under the NES including the entitlement to be absent from work on a public holiday;
     
  • Understand the employee’s ability to request substitute days as public holidays;
     
  • Understand the interaction between the NES, awards and agreements for public holidays;
     
  • Understand the interaction of Public Holidays and other forms of leave.
