The Extensible Business Reporting Language, or XBRL, is a language that enables the electronic communication of financial data. XBRL has truly revolutionized business financial reporting around the globe. XBRL offers an opportunity for IT professionals to closely align with their business colleagues, working jointly to solve reporting problems and issues well before financial reports are filed with government entities. This three-part WatchIT "Core Technologies" series features educator and XBRL expert Thomas Tribunella. Mr. Tribunella is a Certified Public Accountant and an associate professor at the State University of New York's Oswego campus. The first program in the series provided an overview of XBRL and discussed its impact on IT. In this second part of the program, we'll examine XBRL taxonomy building and coding. The final program, Part 3, explores using XBRL with spreadsheets and other systems.
