Dementia 7 – Communicating with people with dementia

This is module 7 of a nine-part series looking at dementia. In this module, we look at strategies for communicating effectively with people with dementia when their communicative functions have become compromised.  

This course has been mapped to the Aged Care Quality Standards 1 and 6.

In this course the following areas will be covered: 

  • non-verbal communication

  • active listening 

  • connecting with the person 

  • verbal fragments 

  • people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds 

  • the validation approach 

  • the reality orientation approach. 

Business Outcomes 

Communicating with people with dementia requires care staff to make adaptations both their receptive and productive communication techniques.
