This module is part of a series of nine looking at dementia. In this module, we look at how a normal brain functions and how it is affected by the progression of dementia. We also look at a few of the most common types of dementia and the distinct effects each type has on the person.

This course has been mapped to the Aged Care Quality Standards 1, 3, 4, and 7.

In this course the following areas will be covered:

  • how the brain functions (neurotransmission, parts of the brain)

  • how dementia diseases affect the brain and its functioning (pathology of Alzheimer’s Disease)

  • understanding dementia as a varied group of neurocognitive disorders

  • some of the most common types of dementia and how they each affect the individual.

Business Outcomes

Having insight into how dementia affects a client’s functionality will enable a carer to provide appropriate support within a strengths-based approach to care.
