Clostridium difficile infection is a severe gastrointestinal infection caused by toxins released from the spore-forming bacteria Clostridium difficile (C. difficile). Strict adherence to infection prevention and control measures is essential to prevent transmission of C. difficile in both hospital and community settings. Australian Guidelines for the prevention and management are regularly reviewed and updated.

This course is based on the latest guidelines for healthcare settings: Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care. Clostridium difficile infection. A model to improve the management and control of Clostridium difficile in Australia (2018). It is consistent with the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standard 3 -Preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infection and the Australian Aged Care Quality Standard 3 – Personal care and clinical care.
