Course Overview

Every older adult experiences chronic illness differently. The presence and severity of symptoms, and the individual's ability to cope with their condition differs based on life experience, social
and emotional support networks, and the strategies they develop to cope with daily living.

Age-associated diseases are chronic, or acute, and related to long-term degenerative processes. Examples include dementia, osteoporosis, cancer, and coronary heart disease.

This course explains some of the most common conditions associated with ageing. It will help anyone providing care to an older person, to understand the conditions and how they may impact upon an individual.

Learning Objectives

Learners will learn the most common conditions associated with ageing be able to recognise the common signs and symptoms. Diseases discussed are:

  • musculoskeletal disorders

  • Parkinson's disease
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • macular degeneration
  • cataracts
  • cancer
