Bullying in the Workplace: What to Do?
Bullying has been around since time began, and more or less accepted as a part of the way things are. Only recently have its victims begun to speak out publicly. In the workplace, where power disparities are the norm, bullying is sometimes seen as unavoidable and is allowed to flourish unchecked. In many cases, victims are discouraged from even naming it. This two-module course describes the most common forms of bullying in the workplace and calculates its costs to victims and organizations; the motivations for bullying are also covered. Finally, the course offers strategies for dealing with workplace bullies. Each module concludes with a brief test-yourself quiz.

Preventing Substance Abuse in the Workplace
One hundred billion dollars. Yes, that’s billion, with a “b.” That’s what drug and alcohol abuse costs U.S. businesses each and every year. Drug and alcohol users and abusers are more inclined to steal; they cause more accidents; they miss more days of work; they can be a source of low morale among their coworkers; and they sometimes drive customers away. What’s more, they add significantly to healthcare costs. While understanding and compassion should be a part of any manager’s strategy for dealing with drug and alcohol abuse—even the oh-so-staid American Medical Association has declared that addiction is a brain disease, no business need tolerate its corroding effects in the workplace. In this two-module course, we discuss the costs of substance abuse to business, explain what to look for, and pinpoint some ways to deal with it effectively. A short quiz follows each module.
