Paediatric Medications: Increasing Compliance
The Paediatric Nurse

Course Overview We’ve all had trouble getting our paediatric patients to take their medicine from time to time but did you know that there are a few ways that you can encourage the child’s compliance even if they don’t like the taste? When we understand how to communicate with children in ways that they understand and build a therapeutic relationship based on trust, children are more likely to push through their discomfort and take their medication. Medication administration is a common task for both paediatric nurses and parents. However it may cause distress both to the child and to those giving the medications. This distress can lead to barriers in the development of the therapeutic relationship, and mistrust between patient and healthcare staff. Unfinished medication courses can also have undue consequences for the healthcare system, including increased presentations to medical services and development of antibiotic resistance.   Target Audience The webinar is for nurses and parents who want to learn helpful strategies to ensure children take prescribed medication.   Learning Outcomes In this webinar session, you will: Gain an understanding of how communication with children is different and why Acquire knowledge regarding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Receive information regarding how to gently tell the truth and listen to the child’s thoughts and feelings in a way that promotes the therapeutic relationship Gain an awareness of how effective listening can assist the child in reaching a state where they can cooperate
